Course Information

Our one-day “Using AI Tools to Generate Python “is suitable for anyone curious about using GitHub Copilot, M365 Copilot, or ChatGPT-style assistants to speed up coding. It can be attended as a standalone course or as a follow up to our two-day “Introduction to Python” course.

Participants will learn:

  • Python fundamentals.
  • How to use AI assistants inside coding tools (GitHub Copilot).
  • How to use AI assistants outside the IDE (M365 Copilot & ChatGPT) to plan, debug, document, and generate code.
  • How to combine all three to build simple Python applications.

Introduction

  • Introduce the tools and their roles.
  • Prepare participants’ environment.

Tools Introduced & Installed

  • GitHub Copilot in VS Code (inline code suggestions).
  • M365 Copilot (for planning, documentation, explaining code).
  • ChatGPT-style assistant (for generating examples, experimenting with prompts).

Python Basics With AI Support

  • Understand basic Python syntax.
  • Use AI to generate simple scripts.

Prompting Skills for Coding

  • Effective prompting styles for coding.
  • When to use each tool.

We look at:

  • ChatGPT – Brainstorm ideas: “List 10 simple Python programs suitable for beginners.”
  • M365 Copilot – Organise ideas into a project plan or outline.
  • GitHub Copilot – Generate functions or code blocks inside VS Code.

Working With Data in Python Using AI

  • Lists, dictionaries, loops.
  • Reading/writing files.

Tools in Action

  • ChatGPT – Ask: “Generate a sample CSV file with 10 rows for testing.”
  • M365 Copilot (Excel) – Use Copilot to quickly generate or modify a CSV dataset.
  • GitHub Copilot – In VS Code, write comments like: # Read a CSV file and count the number of rows → Copilot writes the code.

Mini Project: Build a Simple App With Three AI Tools

Participants Choose One Project

  • Guess-the-number game
  • To-do list app (command line)
  • Simple calculator

How to Use the AI Tools Together

ChatGPT Writing prompts

  • Get pseudocode or a feature list.

M365 Copilot (Notes & Documentation)

  • Convert plan → readable project specification.

Step 3 – GitHub Copilot

  • Write comments for each function.
  • Let Copilot generate the code.
  • Add features such as input validation or menus.

Step 4 – ChatGPT (Debugging & Explanation)

  • Paste error messages.
  • Ask for improvement ideas.

M365 Copilot

  • Generate final documentation or a short project summary.

No coding experience is required, but basic computer skills will help participants follow along. A willingness to learn and experiment with AI-assisted coding tools is all that’s needed.
