Course Information

Cyberattacks are increasing at an alarming rate: Globally, 30,000 websites are hacked daily. In 2021, ransomware cases grew by 92.7%. Every 39 seconds, there is a new attack somewhere on the web. As of 2021, over 60% of financial service companies have 1000+ sensitive files accessible to all employees. (Source: Varonis) About 60% of companies have 500+ passwords that never expire. Microsoft Office attachments pose a significant threat. The average cost of a data breach in 2021 was over $4 million. (Source: Cybercrime Magazine) Email is responsible for around 94% of all malware. A recent Intel Security survey found that 97 per cent of people could not identify all the phishing emails in a sample of 10 emails. The need for training of non-IT staff is critically important. This 2½ course will ensure that staff gain an appreciation of company-wide measures to protect against cyberattacks and their own role in the success of these defence measures. Most importantly, it will help anyone recognize phishing attacks, and when a cyberattack has been successful, understand what steps to take to mitigate the effect. The importance of practicing safe social media behaviour to prevent cyber criminals from mining sensitive personal and company data will also be discussed. In the capstone activity each participant will create a personal cybersecurity plan.
